The Movie Script
Gene plays the role of Margeaux Jumeau, the owner of a French cabaret located far outside the city limits of Paris. She has inherited the cabaret from her beloved father who was killed on the outskirts of Paris in a raid by German soldiers as he was on his way to buy supplies several months before.
The cabaret La Femme Jolie, has the wide-spread reputation of being an upscale establishment that provides much deserved relief and entertainment for the American and French soldiers who are in the area as well as local residents who find the entertainment a welcome respite from the war going on all around them.
When the Germans invade France, they also became part of the clientele for Margeaux' cabaret, and as time goes on, the business must cater more and more to the German soldiers in the area much to the area residents' dismay.
